The Norwich Lanes are a series of alleyways, courtyards and open spaces in the centre of Norwich. The Lanes are full of small cafes and shops, and are steeped in history, so are well worth a visit. The Norwich Lanes Treasure Hunt is a great way of exploring the area with kids.
The Norwich Lanes Treasure Hunt
The treasure hunt begins and ends at City Hall – a stones throw away from the historic Lanes.
The treasure hunt is a one-and-a-half mile guided walk, exploring the Lanes and beyond, and solving clues as you go. The route will take about one-and-a-half hours to walk. We recommend you take more time however and enjoy the shops and cafes on route.
Cafes in the Norwich Lanes
A treasure hunt isn’t a treasure hunt without stopping off for coffee and cake on route. Perhaps even rewarding yourself with lunch for completing the trail and solving the final clue. We’ve listed some of our favourite cafes below but there are, of course, many more great places.
Figbar, run by husband and wife team Jaime and Stephanie Garbutt, is a wonderful restaurant dedicated to desserts. We really need say no more – just go.
The menu, and details of opening hours (Figbar is closed on Sundays and Mondays), can be found at http://www.figbarnorwich.com/
Figbar is located on route at 23 St John’s Maddermarket, NR2 1DN.
Cupcake & Co
Cupcake & Co is a lovely bakery situated on Upper St Giles. It’s slightly off route but worth a detour for their yummy cupcakes and brownies. They serve Jack’s Gelato ice cream for those hot summer treasure hunting days as well.
Cupcake & Co is located at 83 Upper St Giles, NR2 1AB.
The best place to deviate from the treasure hunt route is to continue up Cow Hill and then turn right at the top.
Strangers Coffee House
Strangers is a fabulous artisan coffee shop on Pottergate. They serve scrumptious homemade cakes but the main attraction is surely their locally roasted specialty coffee. Strangers serve the best coffees from around the world and the coffees change throughout the year.
Details of their coffee, and opening hours, can be found at https://www.strangerscoffee.com/location/
Strangers Coffee House is on the treasure hunt route at 21 Pottergate, NR2 1DS.
Frank’s Bar is a chilled-out cafe-bar on Bedford Street. It’s slightly off route but well worth a visit as, in addition to good food and coffee, they serve wine. Sundays are particularly special at Frank’s Bar. They offer a Sunday Breakfast menu throughout the day and screen a classic afternoon film in the back room.
Further details about Frank’s Bar can be found at http://www.franksbar.co.uk/
Frank’s Bar is at 19 Bedford Street, NR2 1AR. The best place to deviate from the treasure hunt route is by turning right on Exchange Street.
Alchemista Coffee Co.
Alchemista, a fabulous artisan coffee house in St Gregory’s Alley, is owned by coffee enthusiasts Dennis Bacon and Jon Bunning. They serve freshly prepared sandwiches and snacks but it’s all about great coffee at Alchemista. Alchemista also has a trendy steampunk theme which we love.
More information about Alchemista can be found at https://www.alchemistacoffee.co.uk/
Alchemista is on the treasure hunt route at 4 St Gregory’s Alley, NR2 1ER.
Louis’ Deli is a wonderful artisan kitchen, slightly off the treasure hunt route, on Upper St. Giles. They serve freshly prepared muffins, pastries, sandwiches, and cakes throughout the day. Louis’ Deli also serve award winning speciality coffees and teas supplied by Butterworth & Son from Bury St Edmunds.
